Ski Area Avalanche Danger vs. Backcountry: Why I Side with the Resort

Most skiers think avalanche danger only matters in the backcountry. I argue that understanding the danger scale is still vital inside the ropes—and that's where you should ski when it's High or Extreme.

The Misconception That Avalanche Danger Doesn't Apply Inbounds

Every winter, I hear the same dismissive line from skiers who should know better: “I don't need to check the avalanche forecast, I ski inbounds.” It’s a dangerous half-truth. Yes, ski areas mitigate avalanche risk, but the North American Public Avalanche Danger Scale isn’t just for backcountry touring. It’s a tool for every skier—because even within the patrolled boundary, you can encounter avalanche terrain, and the danger rating can be a lifesaving clue about what the snowpack is doing. I’m not saying you need to carry a beacon on the groomers, but I am saying that ignoring the rating because you’re “inbounds” is a mistake that could cost you. In this article, I’ll compare two ways to approach a High or Extreme danger day: skiing inside a resort versus venturing into the backcountry. And I’ll make the case that, for most of us, the resort is the right call—but only if you treat the terrain with the same respect you’d give the backcountry.

What the Danger Scale Really Tells Us

The scale runs from Low to Extreme, but it’s not linear. Avalanche danger increases exponentially between levels, not linearly (Avalanche danger scale). That means the jump from Moderate to Considerable is not a small step; it’s a leap. At Considerable, natural avalanches are possible and human-triggered avalanches are likely (Avalanche danger scale). At High, travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended, and at Extreme, all avalanche terrain should be avoided (Avalanche danger scale). These are stark words. And they apply to terrain, not to whether you have a lift ticket.

Resorts do a lot to mitigate that danger. They use explosives, ski cutting, and closure systems. But they can’t eliminate risk entirely. The NSAA reported 50 skier and snowboarder fatalities at U.S. ski areas during the 2024/25 season, a rate of less than one fatality per 1 million skier visits (NSAA fatal incident fact sheet). That’s a tiny rate, but it’s not zero. And the leading cause of those fatalities was collisions with trees (NSAA fatal incident fact sheet). Avalanche deaths inbounds are rare, but they do happen. When I see a forecast of High or Extreme, I know that even the most diligent patrol can’t secure every steep slope. The danger scale is a guide to how careful you need to be.

Option 1: Ski Inbounds—My Pick for High or Extreme Days

When the danger is High or Extreme, my choice is clear: I ski inside the resort boundary, and I stick to terrain that is open and patrolled. Parks Canada strongly recommends that the general public avoid areas where the danger rating is HIGH or EXTREME, and that any travel in these areas be restricted to simple terrain or kept within ski resort boundaries (Avalanche danger scale (Parks Canada)). That’s a government agency telling you to stay in the resort. I’ll take that advice.

But “inbounds” doesn’t mean “anywhere.” I still read the daily avalanche forecast, because it tells me which aspects and elevations are most dangerous. The danger ratings are typically provided for three distinct elevation bands (Avalanche danger scale). So even at a resort, I can avoid the specific chutes or open bowls that face the dangerous aspect. I also pay attention to trail closures. Resorts close terrain for a reason—usually avalanche control. I’ve seen skiers duck ropes to get fresh tracks, and it’s not just illegal, it’s suicidal. The NSAA Responsibility Code, first developed in 1962, now includes ten points (NSAA Responsibility Code). One of those points is to respect closures. I do.

The numbers back up the safety of resorts. Fatalities inside ski areas are less than one per million skier visits (NSAA fatal incident fact sheet). That’s an incredibly low risk. But it’s not zero, and that’s why I still wear a helmet. Helmet use has grown from 25 percent in 2002/03 to 90 percent in 2023/24 (NSAA helmet safety). A 2010 CMAJ meta-analysis found that helmeted skiers were significantly less likely to sustain a head injury, with a pooled odds ratio of 0.65 (Helmet meta-analysis (CMAJ 2010)). That’s a 35% reduction in head injuries. I’ll take it.

Option 2: Backcountry—Only If You’re Trained and Ready

Now, I’m not anti-backcountry. In fact, I love it. But I’m honest about the risk. The statistics are sobering. Since 1995, U.S. avalanche fatalities have stayed relatively stable at about 25 to 30 per year despite rapidly rising backcountry use (Avalanche fatality trends (WEM/USDA)). That sounds like a plateau, but it’s actually a success story. Backcountry use in the U.S. is estimated to have increased 8-fold since 1995; had the fatality rate stayed constant, we might see over 200 avalanche fatalities each winter (Avalanche fatality trends (WEM/USDA)). So the education and forecasting systems are working. But 25 to 30 deaths a year is still 25 to 30 too many.

If you do go into the backcountry, you need to know what you’re doing. That means taking an avalanche course, carrying a beacon, shovel, and probe, and knowing how to use them. The International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR) harmonized the international frequency for avalanche rescue beacons in 1989, which was fixed worldwide to 457 kHz (ICAR avalanche rescue (ISSW 2004)). That standardization means your beacon will work with your partner’s. But gear alone isn’t enough. You need to understand the danger scale and how to apply it. The scale is rated for three elevation bands, and you need to check the forecast for the specific elevation and aspect you plan to ski. You also need to be humble. At Considerable danger, human-triggered avalanches are likely (Avalanche danger scale). That’s not a day to ski a 38-degree slope with a wind-loaded pocket. It’s a day to choose lower-angle terrain.

I’ve seen too many people with brand-new beacons and no training. They think that because they have the gear, they’re safe. They’re not. The gear only works if you know how to use it, and even then, it’s no guarantee. A 1994 study concluded that ACL injury remains possible even with a modern boot-binding system that is properly adjusted (ACL binding study (Acta Orthop Belg 1994)). That’s about knee injuries, but the principle applies: equipment is not a substitute for judgment.

That table captures the key differences. Inbounds, the risk is minuscule, but it’s not zero. Backcountry, the risk is manageable but only for those who are properly trained and equipped. For the average skier—even an advanced one—the resort is the safer choice on a High or Extreme day. And let’s be honest: most of us are average. We don’t have years of avalanche training. We have jobs and families and limited time on snow. That’s okay. You don’t need to ski the backcountry to be a good skier. You need to ski within your limits.

Who Each Is For and the Verdict

If you’re a skier who only skis a few weeks a year, or if you’re with family, or if you’re an expert but you haven’t taken an avalanche course in the last few years, then you belong inbounds. I’m not saying you should never try backcountry—I’m saying that on a day when the danger is High or Extreme, you should be in the resort, and even then, you should stick to open, patrolled terrain.

If you’re a seasoned backcountry skier with formal avalanche training, recent practice with your gear, and a solid understanding of the danger scale, then you can make your own choices. But even you should heed the forecast. On a High day, “travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended” (Avalanche danger scale). That’s a strong statement. It doesn’t say “not allowed” or “impossible.” It says “not recommended.” And I recommend you listen.

So which option wins? It depends on who you are. For the majority of skiers, the resort is the clear winner. It offers the same adrenaline, the same powder (if you time it right), and a fraction of the avalanche risk. For a small minority of highly trained experts, the backcountry can be a rewarding challenge. But that’s a niche. And even they would tell you to respect the danger scale.

The Single Most Important Thing to Remember

The single most important thing to remember is this: the avalanche danger scale applies to terrain, not to whether you have a lift ticket. Even inbounds, you can find yourself in avalanche terrain if you duck a rope or ski an unpatrolled area. So on a High or Extreme day, I ski inbounds, I respect closures, and I keep my head on a swivel. And I still check the forecast every morning, because knowledge is the cheapest and most effective safety gear you can carry.
