You type into the search bar: "Is that slope really safe?" You've checked the trail map, you've got a helmet, and the sun is out. But here's the blunt truth: the ski industry's own numbers show that most deaths and catastrophic injuries happen on terrain you thought was fine. Let's bust the myths that get people hurt.
1. A green circle means it's safe for me, right?
No. Green circle ratings are relative to each resort, not a national standard. A green circle at one mountain can feel like a blue square at another, because ratings are consistent only within each individual resort (NSAA trail signage). That gentle 6% to 25% gradient at your home hill might be a 30% pitch at the place you're visiting for the first time. The same goes for blue squares and black diamonds—they're just a local comparison, not an absolute measure of difficulty. So treat every unfamiliar run with respect, especially on day one.
2. Avalanche danger is low, so I can ski anywhere in bounds.
Wrong. Even at "Considerable" danger—the middle of the five-level North American scale—natural avalanches are possible and human-triggered avalanches are likely (Avalanche danger scale). And that's for backcountry terrain, not ski area boundaries. But the danger scale doesn't just stop there: danger increases exponentially between levels, not linearly, so the jump from Moderate to Considerable is much bigger than you'd think. Parks Canada goes so far as to recommend that the general public avoid areas rated High or Extreme entirely (Avalanche danger scale (Parks Canada)). In bounds, ski patrol controls avalanches, but if you duck a rope, you're on your own.
3. Helmets cause neck injuries—I've heard it's safer without one.
That's a myth that's been thoroughly debunked. A 2010 meta-analysis of 12 studies in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that helmeted skiers and snowboarders were significantly less likely to sustain a head injury (odds ratio 0.65), and the protective effect was even stronger for kids under 13 (odds ratio 0.41). Crucially, the same study found no evidence that helmets increase the risk of neck injury (odds ratio 0.89) (Helmet meta-analysis (CMAJ 2010)). Helmet use has soared from 25% in 2002/03 to 90% in 2023/24, and that's a good thing (NSAA helmet safety). Wear a helmet. Period.
4. Tree wells only happen in deep backcountry snow.
Snow immersion suffocation (SIS) happens when you fall into deep, unconsolidated snow around trees and become immobilized—and it can happen inbounds, especially after a big storm. In the 2024/25 season, snow immersion incidents, including tree wells, represented roughly ten percent of ski-area fatalities (NSAA fatal incident fact sheet). That's not a backcountry-only problem. The NSAA's tree well safety program warns that these accidents are a real hazard at resorts (NSAA tree well safety). The key is to stay within your ability, avoid tree islands after heavy snow, and if you see someone in a tree well, call for help immediately.
5. If I'm a good skier, I can handle a black diamond anywhere.
Maybe, but remember that ratings are relative to each resort. A black diamond at one area might be a double black at another, and a double black means expert-only terrain with extreme hazards like cliffs and rocks (Ski trail ratings). The NSAA's fatal incident data for 2024/25 shows that most catastrophic injuries involved male skiers on more difficult (intermediate) terrain, with speed, loss of control, and collisions with trees as primary factors (NSAA catastrophic injury fact sheet). In other words, overconfidence on terrain you think you can handle is a leading cause of disaster. Check the trail map, ask patrol about conditions, and be honest with yourself.
6. Avalanche deaths are skyrocketing because of all the new backcountry skiers.
Actually, no. Since 1995, U.S. avalanche fatalities have stayed relatively stable at about 25 to 30 per year, despite an estimated 8-fold increase in backcountry use (Avalanche fatality trends (WEM/USDA)). Had the fatality rate stayed constant, we'd be seeing over 200 deaths a year. So why aren't we? Education and forecasting have improved dramatically. Avalanche.org, a partnership between the American Avalanche Association and the US Forest Service National Avalanche Center, provides real-time information (Avalanche.org education). But don't let that lull you into complacency—the numbers are stable because people are learning, not because avalanches are less dangerous.
7. I only ski on groomed runs, so I don't need to worry about avalanches.
In-bounds, ski patrol does avalanche control, so the risk is low. But the danger scale applies to all backcountry travel, and even groomed runs can be near avalanche paths. The bottom line: if you're leaving the resort or venturing into sidecountry, you need to check the forecast, carry a beacon, shovel, and probe, and know how to use them. The vast majority of avalanche victims are backcountry touring, as ICAR's data shows (ICAR avalanche rescue (ISSW 2004)). And remember, even a properly adjusted binding won't prevent an ACL tear—a 1994 study found that ACL injury remains possible even with modern equipment (ACL binding study (Acta Orthop Belg 1994)). So keep your wits about you.
The one thing to remember
Respect the mountain's uncertainty. The danger scale is exponential, trail ratings are relative, and tree wells don't care how good you are. Check the forecast, wear a helmet, stay in bounds, and if you're unsure, ask a patroller. That's how you make it home for the next powder day.
