Ten years ago, if you told someone you were buying a 360-degree camera, the first question was always, "What for?" The category didn't have a name yet, let alone a purpose. Insta360's first model, the Nano, literally docked into an iPhone to cut down on file transfer times—it was a gadget, not a tool.
Behind that gadget was a clunky workflow: shoot, transfer, stitch, then scrub through a full sphere of footage just to find the frame you actually wanted. It was a lot of work for a payoff that wasn't obvious.
Then something unexpected happened. Skiers and cyclists started strapping these cameras to their helmets and handlebars. They didn't care about the stitching or the file sizes. They cared that they could hit record and forget about framing—the camera caught everything, and they'd sort it out later. That discovery turned a niche gadget into a category.
Now, a decade in, Insta360 founder Liu Jingkang says the company's goal has shifted in a way that might seem backwards for a hardware maker: they're trying to build a camera you forget is there.
From 'Shoot First, Frame Later' to 'Don't Even Bother'
The original pitch for 360 cameras was simple: you don't have to decide what's in the frame before you press record. The entire space is captured, so you can "shoot first, frame later." That solved a real problem for athletes—when you're carving down a mogul field or pedaling through a rock garden, you don't have the attention span to compose a shot.
But it created a new problem: after the shoot, you still had to edit. And editing 360 footage is a pain. You're wrestling with a sphere, not a rectangle.
That's why the new X6 is pushing what Liu calls "zero-editing" workflows. The camera, powered by a custom AI model called PanoMind, will sit on your charger overnight and automatically analyze your day's footage—picking highlights, adding virtual camera moves, and cutting it all into a finished video. You wake up, and it's done. No timeline, no scrubbing, no choices.
It's a bold promise. But Liu frames it as the natural next step: "We believe the ideal camera is one you forget exists. Our mission is to make recording effortless."
Skiers Were the Original Test Case
It's worth remembering that the ski connection isn't new. Back when the Nano wasn't even waterproof, skiers were already hacking it onto their helmets with zip ties and duct tape. They didn't care about the specs—they cared that it captured everything without demanding their attention.
That's why Liu says the company's real mission is "recording and sharing," not "creation." He draws a sharp line between the two. "Creation is a need the consumer electronics industry has already satisfied," he says. "If you want to make art, you have plenty of cameras, lenses, and control. But recording—capturing a moment without thinking—that's never been fully solved."
Skiing is a perfect example. You're moving fast, the light is changing, and you're trying not to crash. The last thing you want to do is fiddle with exposure or worry about whether the shot is framed. A 360 camera, mounted on your helmet or chest, just captures it all. And now, with AI doing the editing, you don't even have to think about post-production.
The Numbers Back It Up
Insta360's own data shows the shift. More than half of their 360 camera buyers now say they use the camera for travel and family memories, not sports. That's a huge change from the early days when the entire pitch was "extreme sports."
Liu says the real growth isn't in the dramatic moments—it's in the everyday ones. "The biggest common needs," he says, "are how to make your girlfriend look good and how to document your kids growing up." That's a very different product brief than "make a rugged action camera."
The X6 reflects that. The sensor is 33% larger than the X5, co-developed with Sony. The battery life is up 51%, hitting 140 minutes at 8K 30fps. The camera is smaller. And the AI features are designed for people who don't want to edit—or even think about editing.
Head Tracking: The Ski-Mount Game Changer
One of the more interesting new features is a first-person head-tracking module. You mount the camera on your chest, and it follows your head movements—look left, and the camera pans left; look right, and it pans right. The output is a standard flat video, no 360 editing required.
For skiers, this is huge. You can ski a run, look at the line you want to hit, and the camera follows your gaze. No remote, no app, no post-production. It's the closest thing yet to having a cameraman who reads your mind.
The same logic applies to the new "Gimbal Mode 2.0," which uses the 360 sphere to create a virtual gimbal—you can pan, zoom, and track subjects without any physical moving parts, and get a 4K flat video out of it.
Why This Matters for Skiers
If you've ever tried to film yourself skiing, you know the pain. You either mount a GoPro on your helmet and get a static, boring shot, or you hand your phone to a friend who can't keep you in frame. A 360 camera solves the framing problem, but then you're stuck editing.
The X6's AI director aims to kill that editing pain. You ski all day, come back to the lodge, plug in the camera, and by morning you've got a highlight reel. It's not perfect—AI still makes weird cuts—but it's a start. And for the average skier who just wants to share a run with friends, it's a game-changer. (Sorry, I said I wouldn't use that word. Let's just say it's a big deal.)
The bigger picture: Liu believes the future is even more automated. "Eventually," he says, "the camera will understand what you're looking at, what you care about, and edit accordingly. It will become an AI photographer."
He also thinks the resolution race isn't over. 8K sounds impressive, but when you're cropping a 360 sphere down to a 16:9 rectangle, you're throwing away most of the pixels. "We need to get to 12K, 16K," he says, "but we have to do it within the size, battery, and heat constraints of a wearable device."
The Long Game: From Video to Space
Liu's vision extends beyond editing. He showed off a demo of 3D spatial reconstruction—the idea that a 360 camera could capture not just a video, but a three-dimensional space you can move through later. Instead of just looking left and right, you'd be able to fly forward, circle around a subject, and re-experience the moment from any angle.
That's a long way off, but it points to where Liu thinks the industry is heading: away from "video" and toward "capturing a place." And he's not shy about the implications for his own company. "Maybe one day we won't need a 360 camera at all," he says. "AI could reconstruct a space from regular photos. But the need to truly record a moment that mattered—that won't be replaced."
For now, though, the X6 is a very practical step. It's smaller, smarter, and more autonomous than anything the company has made before. And it's telling that the same people who strapped a camera to their helmet a decade ago are the ones who inspired this direction.
Skiers didn't ask for a better camera. They asked for a camera they could forget. Ten years later, that's exactly what Insta360 is trying to build.
